Can I install an aftermarket thermometer?

My outboard doesn't have an engine overheat buzzer or circuit. Can I install an aftermarket thermometer and gauge to keep an eye on it? The engine doesn't feel warm when I run it in a tank, but after I shut it off there's usually some steam coming out of the tell tale, is that normal?

87 force 35. How does that help or make any difference, out of curiosity? I'm always asked that question but it has never seemed that this information has ever been of any use to the people who answered my question.
I am quite certain that there is not an available thermometer gauge tailor made for this specific make and model and year.

I can basically break down the original problem to being "Do aftermarket thermometer gauges exist for outboard motors? Do they come with instructions and has anybody installed one?"

Re: Can I install an aftermarket thermometer?

When you go to the auto shop for ANY reason, what is the FIRST thing they ask?

For others who have the same question about why engine size and make: Although installing a thermometer or temperature gauge may seem generic and not related to engine make or size, Manufacturers do change specifics from year to year. Some year engines may have some idiosyncracies that do not show up in others--like steam emission after shut-down. It is also possible that manufacturer may have changed the block and there is no specific boss for a gauge sender or the block on a certain engine just may not have enough thickness to be drilled and tapped for one.

Most of the older members of this board sincerely want to help. They know that giving advice without as many facts as possible can lead to incorrect answers. I am not a mind reader and it offends me when prople just assume that I can answer any question. In fact, there are some engines I know nothing about--including your Force-- so once I know engine make and size, I will leave the answer to another person who does.

So there you have it: Was it absolutely necessry to know engine size and make in THIS circumstance? Maybe not. Did it cost you anything to include it in your question? NO!
