Hello!
On a small outboard you have the option to use a piece of a rope, around the flywheel, to start the engine in case the battery is off!
Can i do the same on my evinrude 90hp ocean pro?
Never need it so far but you never know!

Just check the top of you flywheel and see if it has the rope groove. Sometimes there is an emergency pull rope included inside the cowling in a small bag, if not, you can always make one.

There are people that have started the large 250 HP V6's with a rope so it is possible.

First hand experience on a '70 85 HP. Starter bendix failed. I had to use anchor rope and tie a piece of driftwood in for a handle. Motor was still somewhat warm. Took me 6-7 pulls and it fired up. I could get only about 1.5 wrap around the wheel with the thick rope. I was lucky. If the motor is cold, you may need 15-20 pulls.

NO............ you cannot even SEE the flywheel on an ocean pro.....much less wrap a rope around it.....

This is the problem!
The flywheel is cover by some cams and levers required for the correct timing!
Here is pictureflywheel.jpg!
So i must always have a good battery on board!

Re: Can i manual start my 90hp ocean pro?

Merc gave me a rope with a wooden handle for my inline 6 150HP (99 Cu In), and now my 135HPV6 (2.0 L). I have never tried the V6, as I am likely too old and weak. I tried the 1500 one time when I was in my 20s. I found I could pull it over slowly, but not fast enough to start it.

I was able to pull start my '59 fat-fifty, but that was low compression, and starting was about the best thing it did..

TWO batteries would be better!!!!I looked at a 1997 90 hp crossflow diagram an it looks like the flywheel has several notches for using a rope to start.

That pic (above) don't look like no crossflow I ever seen Bob?

Fwiw it is possible to pull start a crossflow, had to do it once. Hurt for days afterward. The motor was reasonably warm at the time.

Think I'd hang myself with the rope before attempting to pull start one nowadays. S'pecially if'n it was cold ...

its not, and I hope I didn't convey that it was..... the op probably has a 60 degree looper OIS motor which has the covered flywheel like I mentioned.... I only added the second post to express that there are large HP motors that do have a place on the flywheel to start with a rope !bob

Looking at that picture I now realise why i don't want anything to do with motors over 50hp or newer than 1975.lol.
