I have 17'6 sunbird w/ a 90hp eninrude that needs to be replaced. Found a 115hp evinrude at a good price. The weight difference is about 65lbs. I think I saw a 110 max for hp on the boat somewhere. I think my transom is in good cond. will check out. would you put it on??

I think I saw a max 110hp stamped somewhere not a 100% sure do think that 5hp extra would matter. As far as weight the diff. is about 65lb to 75lb

It may to your insurance company. You could be on the hook if you ever have a mishap.

Newer models of my boat (essentially identical) are certified for 400HP. When I repowered a few years ago, I didn't consider for a second using more than the placarded 350HP.

The big thing about going over is what the insurance co's would do if you had an accident. Also we all know what kind of lawyers we have in this country.

Not sure what year engines you are talking about. OMC makes different types of 90 and 115 engines. The 90 crossflows are just about the same weight as the 115 crossflows. Those engines were made through the 1996 model year. In the 1995 timeframe, OMC came out with 115 looper engines, which may be slightly heavier.

The 115 is a 93 and the 90 is 96 I checked dry weight for both there is 75lb diff. I guess I'm worried about transom failure or boat performance w/ the extra weight and hp. Was hoping someone had tried before with similiar size boat and motor.

Bottom line is, I'd do it. However, that does not discount the points made above. Also, Sunbirds were not particularly well-built. So I'd be checking that transom out very carefully for any signs or rot, weakness or flex. For my particular vintage V4, the only difference between the 90 and 115 is the carb.

I am questioning the weight difference you have found...that much weight difference seem slike it would only occcur in a lower unit shaft length difference..

are you sure both motor are the same shaft length?

and as for weight and the insurance...it is a moot point... you could put a 4 stroke 90 hp on there that would be a 150 lb weight difference...

Id call the insurance company( if you even have insurance) and just ask them about the 5 HP over the boats recomended max rating.

tell em its detuned!!!!!! ha ha ha
