Help, I bought an old ski boat with a 90hp 3 cylinder, 2 cycle merc on it, I think it is approx a 25 in shaft. I wonder if anyone knows where I can pick up a rebuilt bottom end.
I can't find a serial number plate on it but have found a date on a sticker close to the spark plugs. It says 10 9 78, so I think this would be the aprox year of the motor. I took the boat out for one drive after buyer beware and the forward gear went..... I thought instead of replacing just the gear I would try to find a whole new bottom end for it. CAN ANYONE HELP>?????
I sure hope so, and if not.... anyone want to buy a used boat, no motor... !??

90 triples came out in the 90s. They had 6 cylinders in the 70s. Best we figure what you have before proceeding. The serial number is on a sticker on the swivel bracket on the starboard side. You should be able to see it from behind. They can come off or fade. There should also be a welch plug somewhere on the powerhead with the serial number stamped on it. It's about the size of a nickel and silver in color. It would be odd to be a 25 incher.

HI, thanks for clarifying a few things for me. I am REALLY a cadet when it comes to boat engines and boats for that matter. I appreciate your help.
Well I have taken a picture of the motor and looked at a few other parts on it.
I see 6 spark plugs, and two things marked 3 cylyinder, 2 cycle, and three carberatours, and the color of the engine cover is blue speckle.
Can you add pictures to this?

I took some of the engine.

I still can't find a serial number, lots of other numbers but not the one I want.

Thanks,

Metal, The two switchboxes would indicate that you have the ADI Ignition, and that the motor was built after 1978. There should be a serial number on the clamp bracket, although it may have been painted over. I never heard of a "Blue-speckle" Merc paint job.

If you find some part numbers block, midsection, LU, you can try to match them up with serial number ranges at www.dougrussell.com. When you find a serial number range, you can tie that to a year, or set of years.

year unknown, can't find serial number

can you post pics on here?
I can show you the color of the decal on the motor.
It is not blue striped, it is solid blue, fading from light to dark, with specs in the paint job.

I will go look for the serial number again, I can't seem to find it.
