on my 68 johnsonn v100 can i remove the vacum saftey and wire it the power pack directly to ignition switch? vacum saftey doesnt always complete a circuit even after i replaced the diaphram and sanded the contact points down, when cranking the diaphram moves i n and out and makes completes the ciruit about 50 percent of the time

Yes you can do that. I wouldn't though, that switch is there for a reason. Safety. That switch is what keeps your motor in nutral while shutting down. Repair it.

thought that swithc just gave power to the power pack, is it suppose to pulsate when the engine is cranking ? and besides changing the diaphram and sanding the contact points down what else can be done?

Vacuume Switch
Check operation of vacuume switch. Switch should remain open when ignition key is turned to the on position. Switch sould close after key is turned to start position and starter begins to crank engine. To test switch, disconnect leads at the connector. Connect a test light between the leads. The light should indecate only when engine is cranked with the starter. If switch fails to close press in the center of the diaphram, the light should indecate. If the switch is malfuntioning, pull off rubber diaphram and remove two screws, switch and gasket from by-pass cover. disassemble switch and wash components in solvent and dry.Inspect valve and seat for anycondition that would prevent proper seating. Clean contacts. Check fit of diaphram to switch housing leakage here would preventcontacts from closing. Disk valve should close under presure and open under suction. Because you have a hydro/elect shift your L/U is always in forward gear unless it get an electric signal to be some where else (neutral or reverse). When you turn your key off there would be no signal or nutral, The engine would still be turning, with no signal the boat would still be moving. This switch keeps the signal to neutral until the motor stops turning. Does this make sence?

Re: can i remove the vacum saftey

as i asid i cleaned the contacts, i cleaned everything inside, i checked diaphram for crack/tears , i checked housing for cracks and there is nothing. i used my test light as i mentioned in other post when engine is cranking the diaphram moves in and out it doesnt stay closed when eninge is cranking, so its giving a pulse to the ignition pack, is that normal for it to open and close durnign cranking?

Re: can i remove the vacum saftey

the vacum switch should give no signal to the pack. the altenator gives a voltage through the swtich through a diode to keep the lower unit in neutral until the flywheel quits turning. are you haveing a starting problem? and yes when cranking the diaphram may pulse.

jtl The diaphram moves in and out, because the pistons go up and down. This makes the impulse to activate it .
As I recall the "vacuum" switch lets the motor engage neutral once running.
DHP

Re: can i remove the vacum saftey

i had to rewire the motor cause all the wires were rotten and , the wiring diagram i have shows the 12 volts goingin into the vacum swithc and when the switch is closed it shows it running to the red wire on the ignition pack, so this is not correct? thats is what the wiring diagram shows

Re: can i remove the vacum saftey

ok need some serious help.
i looked at the wiring diagrams again and i have wire colours that are not in the book
one i have a yellow/red strip coming from the vacueum saftey switch(im guessint thats what it is) but my book does not show where it goes to( i thought it did)
next the red wire from the power pack where does it go?shows it goes to the voltage suppressor but i have no idea what it looks like or where it is located,
the manual shows my grey tack wire going to the posative side of the coil, but it is acutally spliced into something else.

now for my forawrd and reverse. with key on i have no power to the light blue or green wire running to my lower end but if i move the control forward i have power to one and when in reverse i have power to the other is that correct? anyone live in ontario that wants to give me a hand lol
also have a regtagle kinda box on between the heads that has a yellow wire and believe its a red wire but the yellow wire has 30 amp fuse what is this box:)
