I am looking to try to start my boat and do a couple things but will not have the outdrive on I have a 85 alpha one 5.7 So I think I am okay to start it for a couple seconds without the outdrive and no water since my impeller is in the lower unit. Just want to make sure I will be okay I know I can't run long since I will have no water for coolling.

15-20 seconds below 1200 rpm won't hurt anything. You can also hook your garden hose to the hose inside the boat that hooks to the transom shield, to provide water to the engine, then run as long as you want. The hose provides the pressure to flow through the system instead of the drive pump.

should be no problem for 30 seconds at tickover but if you have a hose with descent pressure you could put it in the pick-up hole which has the o-ring seal.do not leave it though to have a coffee etc
