can I still use this for this weekend?

Last time we took the boat out we drifted into a submerged log/tree. We must have tore the prop on the way out/off of it. I am wondering if we can still use it for this weekend? It seemed to be working fine the rest of the trip. Would it do damage to anything if I do run it as is?

I wouldnt run it. Buy a cheap aluminum prop and send that one out for repair. Even if you are getting little vibration it is not good for the lower gear box and can actually bend the shaft so slightly as well as burn up your shaft bearing. So NOOOOOOO! I wouldnt run it at all!

I personally wouldn't risk it as it could throw the damaged part clean off the blade with the piece of flying metal going who knows where. It "seemed" to work fine as you put it because there's just one blade damaged and probably the prop is still producing 80% of its thrust.

HOWEVER, the balance of the prop will be out, the prop will probably break if used in anger, and it'll be easier to repair by a propshop (get a quote, it may not be worth it) if you give it to them now, rather than after you bust off the damaged piece. Just my .02c worth.

This is what I was thinking. The prop might still be "balanced enough" with that chunk hanging on, but if that chunk lets go the prop certainly will be way out of balance and that what causes the real damage.

Also as mentioned, with the chunk still in hand, fixing the prop is feasible. Without the chunk, maybe not.

My advice: Buy a new prop. Get this one fixed and keep it as a spare.

Thanks guys for the help. I will have to locate a place in my area that repairs props and see what they say (if it's worth fixing). I really apreciate the advice! Matt

Ok so got another prop. Got the nut off to take the old one off, but there is another part that is keeping the prop on how do I get that off?

Ok so I guess that was a stupid question. It has splines on it to "sinc" the prop with the "driveshaft". I'm sure none of those are correct terms but you can probably get the idea lol.

Just get a small 2x4 and dont wake the shaft hard but just tap it a little as you pull on the prop to send a little shock or vibration to the shaft so it will loosen. Then before puting your new prop on make sure you use marine grease and put some grease on your shaft and on the inside teeth of where the shaft slides into the prop. Then tighten her down all the way tight and out your pin or push the lock into the grooves to ensure the nut wont come off etc... Hope that helped:D

Thank you VERY much! That is very helpful. It turns out the free prop we got from a friend doesn't work on our boat so we will be buying a new one today. Good tho cuz the old one is a 21p and I think we're going to be replacing it with a 18-19p for a little more hole shot pop. :)

I have a stainless steel 13x19 P 15 spline ss prop that I don't need. Its the wrong size for my boats wieght etc... It is literally brand new! I used it on one sea trail and found it to be the wrong size for me. Send me a P.M with your phone number and address and ill send it to you! What year and size motor do you have? Lets make sure she fits first.... Is it 15 spline?
