Can I use aircraft aluminium to build a fishing arch on a boat?

If memory serves me right I can choose from 5052 and 6061 alloy aluminum tubing from a local metal scrap yard. I am fairly handing when it comes to working with aluminum tubing. Is it OK to use this alloy on a boat that will see salt water use? I do not have access to anything that can weld aluminum, so I would be using rivets and plates. The next questions is what diameter does the tubing need to be for a fishing arch that will be used for lights, rocket launchers and out riggers?

The higher number alloys are the ones you want. If you are not going to weld consider using sleeves similar to the way car exhaust is built with a bridging piece inside. Do you have a hydraulic bender? How would you attach the bottom plates?

Have you looked at wakeboard towers? They weigh about 75 lbs and they are rugged. They might do everything you want to.

My plan was to connect the pieces using sleeves. I will also use a tubing bender to get the proper shape. The bottom pieces would need some kind of plate. This part I would either have to find or have someone make for me.

That will work.... just brace/backplate the underside of where you make all your attachments.

My plan was to attach the tower to the gunwales. Should I brace the back with wood, metal, or both? Should I have the brace bridge the front and back parts of the tower?
