Hello again Folks, getting closer to getting this boat wet for the first time. Been sitting in my yard for 2 years and 1 month now. Heres the story so far.
Twin 470 mercruisers 1983 with Alpha R drive. Bought the boat on the cheap because sitting for 2 years somewhere else (and prob because it has 470's). Checked comp before purchase and all looks good. It has the 4 inch exchangers and the alt conv.
You will come to understand i know zip about marine (from what follows) but am learning alot from this forum. I am ok with auto. Well, I got both motors to start and run a little bit, but the port motor got hot fast (yes i had them on muffs). And smelled burning rubber and got alot of smoke from the burning rubber. I did not let it get over 180 degrees because i know these like to blow gaskets.
I pulled the port outdrive and there was nothing left of the impeller. I r&r'd it and after reading alot here think that burning rubber may have been my flappers. Though i did melt the hydraulic lines to the trim when i disconnected them to lower the stuck outdrive. Didnt tie them up and they rested on something hot.
Regardless of where the smell was coming from, when i studied the exhaust coupling to where the flappers are supposed to be i noticed one bolt missing (broken off)on the flange by the po. This boat has a berth inside and i dont want any exhaust fumes going in there and killing someone so i am going to replace the bolts and (also the donught/gasket if there is one)that will give me access to the flappers.
Long story long. I will probably have to drill that flange out and the threads will be toast. I will put a bolt with a nut on the other side. I want to do this right once.
Question? Can i use stainless steel bolts on the exhaust flange or will the dissimalar metals cause a prob. What nuts and bolts do you recommend for salt water use, and what type of antiseise should i use. I only use marine grease on all my other bolts but in a high temp situation i think the marine grease will just run out.
Thank you all for all your knowledge. I am really getting closer to this planter running well and safe.
