I have a Dory 13 with a Evinrude 35 HP 3cyl engine, short shaft.
I am not sure how I get the boat to plane, I slowly increase speed but it wont plane ?
I took some pictures.

Any suggestions.

Should plane easily with 35 HP, in my opinion. Guessing the engine is not in a good state of tune or it's way over-propped.

Time to put a tach on that engine would be my guess. Willing to bet it's not turning anywhere near rated rpm. Time to figure out why. If you knew/posted what size prop is on it, you might get some help there.

Should in theory plane,
but looking at the last two pics it dosen't look like it will plane for long,
what is the boat rated for in hp and weight wise?

I'm with MT, thinkin' you might be waterlogged. I would weigh that boat to see.

The boat looks to be way too heavy in the stern. I think Tassie 1 is on the right track: what are the HP and weight ratings?

I read somewhere last night that this model was rated at 40 or 50 hp, but the biggest thing was all of them eventually got waterlogged and would not plane correctly, this boat is suppose to be a copy of the Boston Whalers, but from everything I have read, they never really attained the type of performance that the Whalers do.

It could be any of the things mentioned. The boa5 seems to sit pretty low in the water and I too am thinking waterlogged. Hard to tell from the pic but the motor looks like it may be mounted too low . Is the cavitation plate even with the bottom of the hull? Mounting too low will cause performance problems.
We need some more info. from you, the questions already asked would be helpful.
Also did you just get this boat? Did it plane ok previously or is this a new problem?
A 35 hp should get that boat with 1 person in it up on plane no problem.

The whole boat is sitting LOW! I'd bet money that you're waterlogged, heavily waterlogged. Before you spend any money on the motor, get the boat weighed!

Hi everybody.
I have some answers for all your good questions.

First, the prop is a 4 blade, I am unsure on the size. According to the manual the engine is born with a 3 blade prop.

I have tried all the 5 holes in the manual trim. Have it down, have it up and so on. It didnt do the trick.
I mounted the engine straight down and the cavitation plate seems to be lower than the bottom of the boat.

I had the boat for 3 years now, and yes I have had it up planing a few times with the old engine (30 HP). The 30HP is so worn and in bad condition that it is a miracle that it can run. I were sure that if I just changed the engine everything would go alot more smooth. But it doesnt.
The boat is rated for max 40 HP. We cant get it to plane even with only 1 person in it.

I dont know how many RPM it is runnning, but I did a video going up to WOT: https://youtu.be/qtFUKCHcb-w
As soon as possble I will get me a tach and measure the RPM.

I cant tell the weight right now, but somehow, after reading your answers I have a feeling that the boat is waterlogged.

Should I drill a hole and find out?
Should I try to mount the engine higher?
Should I try with a 3 blade prop?
Other ideas ?

Gee, how does she look sitting on the trailer? Springs bent down? That would be a good giveaway that she is waterlogged.

Also, without the engine, a reasonably strong man should be able to lift her bow up and move the whole boat, pivoting on the stern, if not waterlogged.

when I was much younger, lol and lighter I had a 14 foot fiberglass boat with a 9.9. I could easily plane with two young boys and hit 20 mph (my guess). With that in mind to answer your question can your boat plane, I say absolutely. With a 35 hp I suspect you easily would crack 30 mph and a 4 blade prop should help you get out of the water, not much for top end but hole shot for sure.

I think the advice given so far is bang on, let us know how it works out.

Is that a 3cyl Johnson 35???
I have a 13' whaler with a 2000 35hp 3cyl Johnson and I can turn a 15p stainless prop @ 6k RPM and 30+ MPH! The boat gets on plane instantly with 2 adults and gear.... I once fouled up a carb and it would not get out of it's own way but ran great at low rpm.
