Can my truck pull my boat?

I'm having a heck of a time figuring out if my 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 with 3.0 litre engine, 3.73 rear axle ratio will pull my boat without killing it. The GVWR on the truck is 5080 lbs with the GCWR being 7500 lbs. The trailer is a 23 footer with a GVWR of 7000 lbs. Dual axle and carries a 1977 22.8 cruiser made by Cruisers. The problem, I guess, is that I don't know what the boat and trailer weigh. Its a fiberglass hull with a 235 hp OMC I/O. Can't find a weight on the boat, but I would guess around 5000 lbs., give or take a ton....all advice appreciated!

The only way to know for sure (IMHO) is to weigh the trailer then go from there. Your towing allowance also varies depending on if the truck is an auto or straight drive.

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

Howdy, WFB.

The tow rating on your truck depends on the equipment. You've got a decent diff ratio, but what transmission? Transmission cooler? Oil cooler? Heavy duty cooling and electrics? A Ford dealer can tell you by reading the sticker in the doorjamb.

My '93 3.0 Ranger 4X4 with 5 speed and 3.73 worked too hard pulling my 2,000lb 17' Boston Whaler on the highway. Stopping it in a hurry was a wet-your-pants exercise. I traded it.

All that said, however, your boat/trailer package, ready to launch will go well over 3,000lb. I cannot imagine a 3.0 Ranger 4X4 being rated for that, even with brakes on the trailer (required in most states).

It is interesting that the 2X4 Rangers are rated to tow more than the 4X4, and the automatics more than the 5 speed. But I wouldn't expect any Ranger, even a 4.0 2X4 automatic, to be rated over 3,000lb.

Bottom line? No. The boat is too big and heavy for a 3.0 Ranger 4X4.

A properly equipped Explorer, Expedition or F150 is the minimum I would suggest.

Good luck. :)

You can go to Nada and lookup your vessel. They will give you the weight in most cases for the boat.
Or take it to a certified scale and for a few bucks get it weighed.

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

Thanks for the advice, guys. I suspected that I'd be taking a chance. Guess I'm in the market for a good used F-250 or something similar. Thanks for the help...really appreciate it!

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

What would be the best place to weigh my outfit? Would a D.O.T. weigh station allow me to do that, you think? Or maybe a trucking company...??? Thanks!

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

Won't-float, you don't need a 250, a 150 with a v-8 and a tow package will do just fine. It should have a tow rating of about 7000 to 8000 lbs and about 500 to 800 lbs tounge weight. I would not pull this on a bumper, but I will not pull anything on a bumper.

JB, as far as tow ratings in 4X2 vs 4X4 and manual vs standard it it pretty simple to realize really.

A manual need human intervention to apply the clutch to the clutch plate and transfer power will pullling off. This can only be done with so much precision. In a manual, the clutches are constantly engaged once it is put into gear and they have more pressure applied as the engine revs building the hydrolic pressure inside the tranny.

In a 4X4, there is an extra set of gears and drive linkages that are not in a two wheel drive. These extra linkages and gears actually weaken the drive train a bit.

TO get the most pulling capacity fro your truck, get one with a beefed up springs, low to mid-range rear-end, auto trans with cooler, large v-8 and 4X2. This will give you the max towing capacity from a production truck in that class range. Also, standard cab vs extended cab even makes a difference. The more weight on the truck, the less it can tow.

Won't float, take your boat to a truck stop that has scales and weigh it. Good luck in your search for an F-150.

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

I agree with the others, you would be way over your limit, and if your Combined Gross Weight Rating is 7500 with a truck weight of 5000 or so, that only leaves 2000 lbs for the load and anything you put in the truck. Any 22.8 foot boat is going to come in at least at 4000-5000 lbs, and a trailer for a boat that size can weigh easily 1000-1200 lbs. So you can easily be a little over 6000 lbs or more. That's too much even for a mid sized SUV, gotta go full size. I would stick with 4x4 it is a blessing on a slick ramp, even if you don't need it for winter driving. And the only reason that the 4x4 may have a lower tow rating is that the extra axle and transfer case add weight, and you have to subtract that from the CGVR. They are not weaker in any way, and if anything they make towing a lot easier. I can pull my boat up the ramp with the Jeep in full time 4x4 effortlessly, no tire spin or sliding back. And when you are on the ramp and put it in park, it is holding you with all 4 wheels, not just the rear ones which can be in the slime or on sand! True there is more to break but all it takes is a little preventative maintenance.

I have a 95 F150 4x4 with 5.8, automatic, and its tow rating is 7800 pounds. That should give you an idea during your search...

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

Here's my opinon:

I had an 86 Bronco II with the 2.9. The 2000 3.0 is going to be a bit stronger mind you, but I towed my 18 foot boat with it and it did it with much struggle. This boat and trailer probably only weigh in around 2000-2500lbs. Now I have a 97 exploder with the 5.0 and it's tow rating is about 6500lbs. Even that's probably pushin it with your boat.

Just like the others are sayin, I wouldn't do it with that rig. You'll probably end up with a lot of damage done to your truck.

You can find a scale at

A feed mill,
a moving company (Graebel, Atlas van lines, etc)
a truck stop,
a gravel pit,
some cement companies,

some will do it for free, some may charge you $5-10.

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

ithrow, the 2.9 and the 3.0 are a trade off. The 2.9 is rated for 5 more ft lbs of torque and is probably a better towing motor than the 3.0.

That being said, I have a '92 witha 3.0 and use it to tow my under 2000lb fishing boat. Power isn't an issue, but stopping is. IMHO, I wouldn't pull a 5k lb load witha ranger. Not enough truck or motor. I also have a '99 F-150 with the 4.6/auto and it pulls the fishing boat without noticing it. I also pull a 4000lb bowrider. I know its there, but the 150 is plenty truck after I put brakes on the trailer.

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

A DOT truck scale could weigh you as well. Interstates near a state border are your best bet for these, but there are other locations, check the internet.

Yep,
And Probably hand you a Fist Full of Tickets Too......Especially if you're towing with an Under-Rated Truck......
roscoe's got a Much Better Idea....

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

Some of the suitability of a tow vehicle depends not only on what is being towed but where.

Here in the flat lands of south Florida my 1993 4X2 2 dr Explorer pulls my 23' Wellcraft CC with twin V4s on a dual axle trailer with disk braakes just fine. I don't think it would work or be safe in hilly country.

Re: Can my truck pull my boat?

Since we're on the subject. I too had a question.
I own a 96 S-10 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive.
The rear bumper says "200 lbs tounge weight , 2000 lb capacity"
I have a small 14 foot fiberglass boat, would I be stupid in even thinking this little truck will pull the boat (and no, I have no idea how much the boat & trailer weighs......yet)
