Can OMC fuel pumps be rebuilt?

In my manuals it says that Johnson/Evinrude fuel pumps are not servicable. It states that if faulty, the fuel pump should be replaced as a unit.

That's fair enough, but last year I managed to buy a fuel pump kit, containing new diaphram and gaskets, for my 1980 Johnson 55. Since fitting the new kit, I don't seem to have had any problems with it.

Is there a good reason why the manual states that you can't rebuild the fuel pumps? Could I be doing un-seen damage to my engine by running it with a rebuilt fuel pump?

Thanks
Steve

Which manual is telling you that?

Don't know where you got the manual but sounds like a money grab to me, as far as i know all fuel pumps can be rebuilt on the older motors and kits are available, as to the other question no you won't damage your motor by rebuilding the pump just get all the springs pack in the right spots or it won't work.

My OEM manual and my Seloc manual both state that the fuel pumps can't be serviced.

Just checked my Clymer, and they state that there are repair kits available to overhaul a defective pump!

Steve
