factory wiring is too small to carry the current.A slave is used to trip the main solenoid on the starter.

mostly what bt Dotur says, the engine marinizer has no control over how far away the key switch is mounted, some boats will be 30+ cable feet away from the engine.

thats also why a lot of late model stuff runs ign relays as well.

Yep,we can run small voltage all the way back to the engine, and actuate BIG voltage.Really it is an amperage issue.

Additionally, it's an electromagnetic switch. When it has 12v applied to a coil of wire, the resulting magnetic field acts on an armature that closes the circuit between your battery and the starter solenoid. Although it's a little different, think of it like a relay...

The stuff I don't get is how this *might* be affecting my tilt/trim. On another of my threads, it was suggested that a faulty starter assist solenoid could make my tilt and/or trim act bad. Does the key position affect the starter assist solenoid? My tilt works without the key in the on position, so how might it affect that? I guess I could just replace it with a known good solenoid, but I'd prefer to know how it fits in the schematic (and my schematics are worthless).

I don't know what engine you have, or what year or make or anything else. But a start slave solenoid only controls power to the start terminal on the starter solenoid. Has nothing to do with trim or tilt on any drive that I am aware of......... UNLESS you have corroeded, loose, or a bad connection on the "Always HOT" side of the slave solenoid, and that is where the power to your trim pump comes from, I don't see any possible way for it to be the problem.

Sorry Don... 1978 OMC 2.5L Stringer 400.

I'm with you, I don't understand how it would affect the tilt or trim.

My issue is intermittant so I guess I'll have to do a bit of troubleshooting when it's bad.

They are related in that they all pull their power from the same source. If you solve your start problem, you most likely will solve your tilt/trim issue as well.

Sounds like a bad wire or connection like I said on the other post.

Corrosion takes the form of white or green powdery residue on electrical connections. Clean and tighten all connections.
