Can Someone tell me what this rubber ring is for?

Im installing my ujoint bellows on my merc alpha gen 2. and I have this rubber ring lying around that I think fell out while I was removing the old bellows. What is it?

That ring goes inside the bell housing and seals the driaveshaft/u-joints in the drive bellows. There should be a little lip that it fits up against a few inches into the opening of the bell housing.

It's almost impossible to tell from your blurry picture.

It's also so big that I have scroll around to see it. YOu should remove that image and take another one. size it so we don't have to scroll to see it. oversize pictures make is VERY hard to view subsequent posts too...


If that O-ring is a roughly 4" square type, it's probably the large O'ring that seals the drive to the gimbal housing.

I just installed the metal ring does this rubber ring go in front of that?

looks like the seal for the upper to the bell housing to me on an alpha drive.

ya put it in the same hole ya stuff the drive into on the bell housing. it goes in just prior to putting the drive back on the bell housing.. it's the seal between the nose part of the upper and seals to the bell housing. there's a land for the seal to rest up against. i put a little sticky stuff on that seal to be sure it don't move out of location while i'm installing the drive.

You should have a new one, along with the new gasket and a few other o-rings. New o-ring for water inlet and drive input shaft (3 I think).
