Can t stop the motor

I managed to start my 1960 Johnson 40hp who was not started since 1985 and I encountered a few problems.
The motor started after ~ 60-80 crank resolutions from the key, it was running nice a few sputter here and there ( the mix i have is 50:1 ) but the soonest I turned the key to off position and got the key out the engine was still running.
The only way to stop it was to remove the fuel line , I stop it because no water was coming out from the exhaust water hole and I was afraid that the engine will overheat.
Can somebody help me with some ideeas? I know that there are 2 wires going to the ignition switch who gets grounded when you shut the engine off but obviously it did not worked .
Second does the water suppose to come out from the hole at idle speed? ( the motor is running in big garbage bin full of water, and can somebody tell me where the termostat is located?
The water line who goes to the automatic choke walve was hot, do I need to purge the air from the cooling circuit?
Please guys can you point me to the right directions my manual arrives in 2 weeks and this weekend I want to take my son on a small ride.
Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Can t stop the motor

There are 2 black wires that go to the M posts on the ignition switch one is from the Magnito I believe.

anyways the two black wires are what you want. one to each M post on the ignition switch.

As far as the water it just kinda spits a bit but not much at all when idling.

hope this helps

P.S. This is the help I recieved when I did my wiring a few years ago

M-BLACK (GOES TO GROUND)
M-BLACK WITH YELLOW STRIPE (KILL CIRCUIT)
ON THE TWO M TERMINALS IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH WIRE GOES TO WHICH ONE.
S-YELLOW WITH RED STRIPE (STARTER SOLENOID)
C-PURPLE WITH WHITE STRIPE (CHOKE)
I OR A-PURPLE (ACCESSORIES)
B-RED (BATTERY POSITIVE)

Re: Can t stop the motor

Thank you for your reply I see the wires and I will test the circuit to the ignition and ignition contacts.
Also I ve found the thermostat housing opend it the thermostat was in closed condition ( I will test it in boiling water soon to see if it opens) the strange thing is that the thermostat housing was completly dry not a drop of water, doesn t the pump supposed to push at least a bit of water?
I blew compressed air in the water circuit and is free of clogs the water makes bublles at the hole close to propeller so I am lost, does the water pump does not push at all?

Re: Can t stop the motor

Well this matter is so confusing the original gas tank of the motor say 50:1, I wonder why? because the oils where not so good then?
I will go 24:1 after this tank is empty I suppose that the only bad thing is the smoke and even better the motor was not started since 1985 so more oil should do some good.
BTW what additive is recomended to add to mix to clean the fuel lines and carburator?

PS-"The following is generally true: 1958 and prior used 20:1, 1959 thru 1963 used 24:1, 1964 and newer use 50:1. High performance usage (racing) requires a ratio of 25:1. New engine break-in (not DI) requires 25:1"

Keyword GENERALLY TRUE - means that there are some exceptions to apply to certain engines and conditions I think

Re: Can t stop the motor

I already did quite a few from the list posted on the link, the only thing left is the water pump impeller, but still I don t get it why the engine does not stop, i checked with the ohmeter the continuity of the wires to the ignition switch and the switch contacts everything checks ok.
