grind off the weld...remove whats left of the spindle*....buy new one..line up... weld it back in... actually a really easy job if you can weld... almost forgot, remove the other hub so you can measure the distance from the end of the spindle to brake flange..

btw...i cant resist saying it.........if you weld the hub* on your tire wont turn :)

Re: Can this axle be fixed

yup the part thats broke is the spindle.
the big thing with the 4 bolts sticking out.... and has the bearings inside it which im assuming you have never greased?? :/ is the hub
gently tap off the bearing buddy. that chrome shiny thingy on the end ;) and you will see a cotter pin, pull it out and take off the big nut and then the washer.....with any luck now the hub will slide off...

put new bearings in both sides!! and probly a good idea to replace them on the other axle too!

i was hoping i wouldnt need to add to that........get out the hammer......must be why the other one broke....chances are the inner bearing is seized on the spindle from overheating due to lack of grease.....try tapping around the back of the hub, tapping all the way around so you put even pressure on it.

Re: Can this axle be fixed

Do you have good insurance? I ask because I sense a disaster in the making. The spindle is the piece you show in the picture, but that is only part of it. The piece that broke off is still in the hub for that end of the axle. To get the entire axle stub you need to cut or grind the weld where the spindle meets the axle tube just in front of the square plate. You then need to ensure the replacementy spindle is properly aligned and welded. This is not a job for a shade tree welder -- especially one that learned yesterday. Improper alignment causes rapid tire wear. There are also two different types of spindles. One type slides into the tube several inches and the other just has a short machined area that slips into the tube 1/2 inch or so. To determine the correct brake shoes, measure the inside of the drum. These will likely be 8-inch, 8-1/4 inch, 10 inch or 12 inch. Measure the width of the shoe. Check the inside of the drum for grooves and corrosion. Failure to machine the hubs will cause rapid brake wear. Then you need to clean and inspect the bearings. If they are ok, pack them and install the hubs. Don't forget to inspect the bearing races in the hub. If you broke a spindle, it was either because the trailer was overloaded or the bearings went bad. Replacement of a bearing requires replacement of the race as well. I have the feeling you are in over your head with this project. Since safety is a concern here, think about having someone who knows what they are doing do this repair. Lastly, make darned sure the bearings are adjusted properly or you will be doing this again.

Re: Can this axle be fixed

ok so i forgot i had the old wheel.. so i got the other spindle out of that and im bringing it over that guys house and hell weld the spindle back on the way its supposed to be and make sure everything is in good condition.. im also bringing the brakes over to see if their salvagable.. the other grease bearing is on the trailer box so that might also be salvageable.. im pretty happy that i can fix this and not spend 400 dollars for a new one..

That spindle has to be PERFECTLY aligned with the brake mounting hardware. When they make the axles they have everything held in a jig so that everything is perfectly aligned. If the spindle is not held perfectly aligned with the brake mounting flange, your brakes won't operate properly.

stop! no you cannot just weld that broken piece back on!!!!!

silvertip....not too step on any toes but as i understood as i was trying to explain it to him he said he was going to have someone else weld it up already..i was only helping out the dismantle process...but i agree from the beginning he is in over his head......although anything is possible...

not every axle is made or has to be made in a jig.......the new spindles are made with almost no tolerance to the tubes, so theres not alot of aligning to be done. atleast not with the ones i bought anyway. which were from a specialty spring and trailer outfit here that make axles... replaced 4 spindles just last season..
