can u put a good prop on 1978 johnson 25 hp and if so where good place to buy it?

it the kind that has pin to hold prop on and cover that screws down with another pin.

Look for numbers near the base of the blades. it's very possible your present prop is the right size.

it on a 14 ft stripboat that i had built by Spivey stripboat.

the prop measures 8 in across

It either has the wrong prop or you measured wrong.Measure from center of the bore to the tip of one blade and double the result.
It came with a 9 1/4" X 11" (diameter X pitch. Options in 78 were 9 1/4 X 7,9 X 10 weedless and 9 X 9.
Do you know the dry weight of the boat . Does it have a soft or hard chine?
From the size of the boat it appears a 9 1/4 X 11 prop should work.
