Can We Build Custom Performance Plug Wires For These Old Motors?

I've got some left over plug wires, connectors and boots for a universal 8mm Taylor Automotive Performance Spark Plug Boot set. Is it safe to make and use a set on my 1954 Johnson 25hp RDE-16? I wonder if the excess voltage/spark would damage the piston top or affect the engine heat too much?

It'll work fine as long as the wire will fit thru the holes in the plate. And clear inside the flywheel. Stailness ends would be nice like the performance wires we use now.

Good luck!

On this subject....Is there any reason you can't use heavy duty automotive plug wires on any outboard. I was wondering this as I paid almost $12.00 a piece for evinrude plug wires for my 85 140hp.

CigarXTC - the wires used in your outboard are copper core. They have no resistance, and the conductor does not degrade in time like it will with automotive types. If you do want to use high performance wires, you'll need 0 ohm shielded ones for your magneto ignition system. The (small) resistance of automotive suppressor type wires is enough to seriously impact the amount of energy delivered by the spark, since the bulk of energy transfer between the spark and the fuel/air mixture occurs at around 100v.

There's a post about this in General Outboard Questions, a couple months back.

I think the reason outboard wires are so expensive is that they are seldom replaced since they don't degrade. They have lifespans exceeding 50 years (as you can see for yourself). For applications where RFI is important, such as modern electronically controled engines, they put the resistor in the sparkplug.

On the other hand, if you find some nice *looking* copper core wires (mabey blue or yellow) - please let me know!

Good luck and have fun!

Hey 8up,

List price on the factory plug wire kit for your '85 140 is only around $9.

You can also make your own by purchasing each end at around $2.25 each and a 6" length of bulk Packard 440 sollid core wire for less than a buck from an authorized dealer.
