hi,
i have a motor i want to sell, but i'm not sure if clutch dogs in lower unit are ok. last time i was out the shifter teeth in control skipped a tooth so the revs were up when it shifted gear. i got it into the ramp right away, but it got much worse and i could hear the clutch dogs skippinp pretty bad when i tried to powerload the boat beacause my winch strap broke. what a day. if i put the lower unit in forward and turn the prop in reverse until it turns the motor, will this be enough to let me know the clutch dogs are ok, or is the only way to know is in the water under load?
thanks

Not really. The feeling of hitting a submerged object during RPM increase is the usual sign of a worn dog. Opening her up will verify.

You'll have to take the g/c apart to check it. By the way, what's the model # ???

the tag is missing on the side and i didn't see the plug on top that usually has it. i think it is a modle year 1976. it came off a 1976 grady white.
