I read thru the old thread achris was discussing, but thought the issue wasn't with the pan, I thought it was with the timing cover.

Can you confirm?

yes, I can confirm - the issue is w/ the aluminum oil pan, a defect, causing the plastic to crack
Achris was only able to fix in full by swapping the pan to a steel, and using the plastic timing cover

I just got the pan off, and its got a GM stamp #12557229
if that would help

achris is on a diff time zone, I had some questions for him
he showed me a 4.3 pan, but was for 2003
I'm showing research showing that the steel replacement pans wont work to replace the aluminum ones, maybe something due to the 1 seal in the back? compared to 2? as the vortec has aluminum and many posts that the steal won't replace or work to replace the aluminum :(

WOW! man that would be awesome if I could get that to fit - that only50 bucks compared to 250
doesn't look like its got a drain plug, but it looks like its got the dip stick on the correct side
wish I could see the back to make sure its rounded

I replaced my defective cast ali pan with a new cast ali pan (bought direct from GM, not Mercury). Steel pan will not fit. If the mechanic resealed and reused the old pan, it WILL break the new cover and leak again. I did this for 2 years. Engine out, 'fix', engine in. Only time it truly fixed the problem was to replace the pan with a new one. The part I gave you the link for is the right part. It's used from mid 1996 to 2007, when they changed the block drillings and used an ali timing cover, which will not fit on our engine blocks.
