I bought this boat, just for the engine. But I can not seem to find the serial number. Can you tell me what year it may be? The only number I have been able to find is: 971-8435 which were located behind the carb on the block. Not really sure if its a part number or serial#
Re: Can you help me find year for this Mercury Straight 6
The sr# should be on the transom braket down on the side and on a welch plug, about the size of a quater and silver colored, for most all motors. Some have the tag between the transom brackets on the tilt tube also. The sr# should be 7 #'s long with no space between.

You have a very well sun faded 83-88 inline 6. The king of motors imho...
Not a frakenmerc at all.
Unfortunately the serial number is just a plastic sticker that quickly fades or just peels off.
Mine starts with OA followed by 6 digits..
I bought the boat for the engine. The hull is a classic 73 16 ft.Chrysler trihul , but I am going to dump it and hang on to this engine. I had one of these engines, but a 115 10 years ago and it served me very well.
