Re: Can you ID this leak??

what is the model number of the motor. My guess is that you have unburned fuel and oil coming down through the motor leg. Does is smell like gas? How does the motor run? YOu can minimize this by doing a decarb on the motor. If the motor is mid 70s your puddle valves may be plugged. If it is late 60s real early 70s look on the port side of the motor. Are there two hoses coming from the area below the carb going to a tee and then going to a valve hooked to the top of the motor leg? This is a raw fuel drain that dumps gas into the lake. Chrysler started doing this on their late model motors to help get rid of condensed gas and dumping it into the lake. Decarb will minimize this but not eliminate it. The reason you are noticing it now is that the gas has probably eaten away at the upper and lower gasket on the motor leg that the powerhead rests on. Please post the model number so that someone can be of more help.

Looks like a crack, but it's above the sealed part of ther l/u???

Does the l/u lube pick up water?
At any rate, a pressure test in a drum of water should reveal any leaks.
remove the vent screw, and make or buy a fitting for an air hose, and pressurise the l/u to 5PSI (no more), with the l/u submerged. Look for bubbles. If no bubbles, and pressure holds, you should be ok, it's just residual oil from 2 cycle cumbustion,running-down the leg.
I suspect it's a water pump housing seal, or shift shaft seal, but only removal and another air test will show that. With it mounted on the leg, you will see bubbles comming from the mating surfaces of the l/u and leg, or out of the water intake.

actually guys, the whole engine seems to smell like gasoline. It is a 1972 55hp Chrysler Model #556HD. The leaking stuff does smell like gas.

Actually, you should have gunk leaking out the rear hole too. Put a drill bit in the rear hole and see if you free it up. I don't think you have a big problem as mine looks the same. I'd be more concerned if the LU oil looked milky.
Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my gun

No oil should be there, nor any leakage at all.Two metal surfaces sealed by an o-ring.The exhaust is above this at the snout attached to the cavitation plate.
My guess is a heavy under water hit,or MAYBE loose bolts holding the unit togeather.

DHP

You are suppose to have two holes there where the gas is dripping out. It looks like one of the holes got covered with the JB Weld. On an older chrysler you are going to have gas drip out those holes

You can see one just above the pivot screw and the other just in front of the prop.

Again how is the motor running. Does it idle good. How fast does it run at wide open throttle and how does it sound at wide open throttle. I had my chrysler apart this year for the same reasons you are posting about. I replaced exhaust gaskets, Spent weeks removing old carbon, replaced the upper and lower motor leg gaskets and replaced the exhaust snout gaskets. In doing so I broke three screws to the exhaust gaskets and had to JB Weld and retap. I dont recommend this because after the work was done and after loosing about a month the gas still leaks, Just not as bad. I drilled a hole in the cover and run the drain hose to a small bottle clipped to the fuel line so the gas dont leak in the lake anymore. After about an hour of motor use I am loosing about 2 oz of fuel oil mix into this little container. If you want to pursue this email me at ralgoetz@comcast.net and I will send you pictures. The leakage you are seeing is normal even if it is excessive. Do the decarb and make sure you have good spark and you are getting a good burn. After doing the work I did I got an extra 1.5 MPH out of the motor and it runs at about half the noise.

Good Luck
