What would happen if you were driving say 20 mph, and turned the engine off and put the transmission in neutral. Then turned the ignition back on (but not the engine). Then you put the transmission back in drive.

what would happen? if the transmission was in drive when the enigne was not on, with the wheels moving?
would that be like popping the clutch?

Zip! Nada! Automatics in the last several decades lack the rear fluid pumps that allowed earlier automatics to be push started.

Soooo, did you let the son borrow the car and it came back broke?:D

Kidding aside, it should not hurt anything.

A Chevy station wagon made in the 60's will in fact restart AND blow the muffler off the car. It also leaves an inquisitive teenager with a lot of explaining to do!

What you are talking about is the same as towing the vehicle. They have a limit on how far you can go without burning up the transmission. Without the rear fluid pump, not only will it not jump start, it will fry the transmission after XX number of miles.

Watch out for that locking steering wheel :D

Used to think it was good fun to turn the engine off on old 850 Fords....made quite a bang when they re-lit

So will a Pontiac. The teenage driver driving his Dad's car didn't do it but some idiot sitting in the passenger seat did. I didn't have any explaining to do. :D

Old joke. Man tells his wife to push start him with her car, but explains that his automatic won't start 'till he's doing 35 MPH. He looks in the mirror to see her coming at him at 35 MPH.

Don't know about recent vehicles.
But I can tell you I had a 1983 Impala with a 305 and a TH350 trans can infact be push started.

In high school we talked about this and decided to try it. We had to get the car up to about 45mph before the engine would turn and fire up. Didn't matter if it would have wrecked it. The car was on it's way to be a demo derby car.

I dont think it would come out of drive at that speed. No you can not push start an automatic car or truck.
