Hello
you may check venezuela. the e4xchange rate is very nice and the fishing is good
a 3 dollar tip at the resturants will bring undivided attentin. My fiance lives in caracas and rio chico is only 3 hours away
but some day I want to fish for peacocks on the orinoco. one of the tackle outfitters in valencia looked my gear over and laughed. I told him it serves for stripers and he said a small peacock would break it in half. I looked it up on the net and they look like some bad bass:) :)
one day maybe :)
good luck and keep posting
they call them Pavon in venezuela
type it in your seach engine

It's nice that you can travel during your time off, crabby.

Never been to Cancun, but several people have told me it is very commercial anymore, with McDondalds, KFC, etc. everywhere, so it sort of lost it's "foreign country" flair.

I have been to Mazatlan, which IMO, still has a lot of the Mexico charm and is pretty cheap. The are police everywhere, so it is quite safe day or night.

The deep-sea fishing is cheap (about $80 person per day) and quite good as I caught my first blue marlin at 182lbs. Bill Heimpel's Star Fleet is the place to sign up.

We stayed at the Playa, which is a renovated 50's luxury hotel. Our rooms were about $70/night.

Have fun with whatever you do.

Re: cancun

Mornin' CB.....

I'm a frequent traveler to mexico. I have been to Mazatlan once, but never to Cancun. I am a frequent flyer to Puerto Vallarta, as I have been there about 25 times, since the mid 80's.

Mazatlan is ok, but I find much more to do in PV and it is not so spread out. I spent 9 days in PV last month and had a great trip, except for hurricane OLAF. No fishing for the last 4 days, due to the high winds and electrical storms. I did not see ONE boat out durning that period, which was smart.

They have some nice fishing turnaments in Nov. and Dec. there and they get quite a draw. The exchange rate right now is apx. 11 Pesos per dollar, which makes it quite affordable and especially if you are sharing accomidations. There some magnificent resturant's in PV, where you can spend $5.00 or $50.00 for dinner. I eat just about everything there, except lettuce. English is spoken every where in PV, so not speaking Spanish is no problem, but it does come in handy.

Puerto Vallarta is a VERY safe city, with several types of police agencies, but they are not overbearing. Things pick up there during the winter months, as the get many travelers from Canada, the upper midwest, east coast and even Europe. They call these travelers, "Snowbirds".
Most of the airlines that fly there offer winter "snowbird" specials.

If you are interested in going to Mexico this winter, you might consider Puerto Vallarta, as the accomodations are very afordable, what ever your taste in hotels might be.

The summer weather pattern will be over and you can expect days of 80+ with a wind chill of 85+ and without the summer humidity.
If you are interested in PV, I have some great sites saved, that I can e-mail you or post the site connctions on this board.

 ...Bob in Calif...

Re: cancun

I just checked the weather in Puerto Vallarta and at 11:45 AM, CDT and it was 88 deg. with a heat index of 94 deg., with a 7 mph. breeze. Weather like that is responsible for long "Happy Hours." :p

...Bob in Calif...

Re: cancun

If you have never been it's well worth the trip. If you stay off the island the rates will be very reasonable ( in town or north of town). Tons to do - check out the ruins, fish, or my favorite - sit on the beach smoking cubans while someone brings you drinks with umbrellas. If you really want to have some fun check out Puenta Allen ( southwest of Tulum ruins) almost to Belize. Almost like going back in time. A couple of things - the more Spanish you speak the better, before renting a car down there watch the movie " Road Warrior" to get you in the proper frame of mind - and be very aware of the rules of the road. Cancun is strictly an americanized tourist town right down to the Wall Mart supercenter. The wife & I go once a year and we have never had a bad experience yet.

Check with Adventure Tours also. They have all-inclusive tours all over the world and they're real pros, they know their caca (Spanish for "stuff").

c/6
Hooty

Re: cancun

Sounds like a good deal - especially inclusive of airfare. We have one of those RCI timeshare deals and usually stay at one of the Royal resorts on the island so I can't speak as to what the rates run. I imagine any of the 4 star rated will be very nice - marble floors, coincerge, etc. The level of personal service will spoil you - bring a ton of 1's. Trust me they will come in handy, when buying anything you can use american money but you will always get change in the local currency. If you are going to do some fishing the resort can point you in the right direction - but it's best to talk to some of the workers, everyone knows someone that will cut a deal for you - most love to haggle. Just be sure to look at the boat before you make a deal, you don't want to be deep sea fishing in a flatbottom. The bus tours are a good deal for the first time down there and Chitzeneza (sp) and Tulum are much better with a guide. Also the big nature park southwest of Calica is a really neat place. Be sure to check the dates - if you don't like crowds stay away from spring break time.

Re: cancun

Crab bait, definately take the trip down to Cancun. Went there in '98 for our honeymoon and it was beautiful and a good time! (A couple days are still foggy in the memory! haha) Stayed at an all inclusive resort....which seemed like the best deal. Drinks were definately watered down...but who cares when they are free! Take the tours to the ruins and do some snorkling. The water is clear and blue..just like you see it on the postcards. Best advise we got from our travel agent was to stay away from the city and take the public transportation (buses)-- no taxis!! Have a good time! --Derek

Re: cancun

for whatever reason, the one american label included in the all inclusive is an american vodka, wolfschmitt (LOL!) or something, so I would have them make me a double vodka margarita with a splash of pina colada

YUMMMMMMM!!!!!!

drew girly girls like a magnet, wow that looks GOOD!

yeah it is, pull up a straw and try some

and well, yanno how it goes from there ...

:D :D :D :D :D :D
