cannot get engine to tilt up or down...

Yeah, I feel pretty stupid right now. I have two evinrude engines both in the 70's I cannot get them to tilt up or down. I have spent about 45 minuets trying to figure it out. I have them on stands and I am trying start one of them but can't b/c it tilted up in the air and I cannot figure out for the life of me to get it to tilt down. <br /><br />Feeling very retarted - Josh

Hey Josh,<br /><br />Should have a release lever on it(Starboard side). Then pull up on the lower unit and then drop it down.

is it the lever that says lock and release. B/c if that is the lever it's not working on both of them. Unless I am just not doing it right.

Flip the lever to "Release" then tilt the motor up as far as it will go then let it down. It should come down now.

Port side, above the transom, under the tiller arm, is the manual locking lever still there? See Exhaust diagram item #69. <br /><br />Also I think that they had to be in neutral but I can't remember for sure.

well I have no Idea what a manual locking lever even looks like. The engine is not on the boat. I have not ever put it on the boat yet. I am in the middle of rebuilding the transom. Ok well next time I get a chance ill try it again with it in neutral.<br /><br />What is port side?

Standing in back of engine... Port=left, Starboard=right.<br /><br />Easy to remember as "Port" only has 4 letters same as "Left".

YEah, I just did everything you guys said and its still not working on both engines. I can't get it to tilt up or down.<br /><br />oh and I don't know what a manual lock looks like.

My email address follows. Send me a bunch of clear pictures of the engine with various views. From what I gather, from your viewpoint, the engines are frozen and won't move.<br /><br />I'll also need the model numbers of both engines. It would be as good idea to also list those model numbers here. Just stating that the engine are somewhere in the 70's really doesn't tell us much.<br /><br />Either they're frozen at the tilt tube or the tilt lock aseembly is jammed, missing something, whatever.
