I recently bought a nice looking 9.9 Mariner and having a time trying to ID the model and year. The motor is in nice shape, ruins well and came with controls but the owner had just bought a boat with this as a kicker and had no need for it so he sold it. He was told by PO that it was a 97 or 98 model but I think it is a bit older. I have looked it over and all I can find is a serial number tag which is BLANK...Tags looks good but the silver area where a number should be is clean. Does not look like it was erased, maybe just faded. I still see no tag showing the model of the motor. I saw a date code 06-21-94 on the case so i assume it is a 94 or 95 but still not sure what it is. Is there a hard to find area on these that I am overlooking? I want to get a manual for it and also need a part to hook up to my starcraft for steering....I see two threaded holes I suspect something could be screwed into. Lastly, do these motors not have an air intake or silencer etc.? The carb looks OK but I see nothing over it. I suspect it did not have one but want to be sure.

Sorry I loaded this twice somehow, in both this area and the mercury repair forum. Can't delete for some reason.

OK I did a poor job of describing this motor so I looked again and am pretty sure i found what I was looking for. In a very hard to read place I found a round metal pc that had a number on it. Looked like a 0G136421. Looking online that matches up to a 7010312DD, which is a 1995 motor. Since I saw a code date on 1994 on the block this makes sense. Looks like the carb cover is missing but otherwise this motor is in very good condition. I will have other questions but my main question is how decent a motor is this? I have had three Evinrude motors but never a mariner. Anything to watch out for? I know some of these were yamahas and some are better than others. For 650 bucks I think I did OK. As far as carb cover I found one on ebay for ten bucks.Looks like a manual might be harder to find. I plan on using this a primary motor on my 16' Starcraft so am wondering how to connect the steering. I see two holes on the front that appear to be place to hook up a rod assembly for coupling to another motor perhaps. I know this motor won't push us fast, but we only go to 10HP max lakes and I needed the remote steering and controls and this should be a bit better than my 8hp evinrude power wise.
