Cannot Identify Lower End

I bought a Johnson lower end to rebuild my outboard and although it looks similar, none of the numbers seem to match up.

The exhaust housing is stamped with: 319360

The gearcase is stamped with: 324095

I tried the usual Marine Engine, Boats Net, etc., but cannot find anything to identify it.

I was told it was from a 25 or 35 hp outboard.

Thanks to all in advance!

Well I guess I have to ask. What year and size is the engine you have and what year is the lower unit supposed to be from?

Re: Cannot Identify Lower End

My outboard is a 1978 Johnson 25HP (Long Shaft).

The replacement lower end was supposedly interchangeable with everything from 1976-1980 but none of the numbers (listed above) match mine nor can I find the numbers anywhere. I was told it was taken from a 35HP motor.

I was hoping, at the very least, to determine what other motor (and range of years) these parts can be used on.

TY bonz ...

Yeah, it's a 1pc thru-prop so it's obviously off of a 35hp and not interchangeable with mine.

Is it possible to determine the year from these numbers (exhaust housing #319360 / gearcase #324095)? I will try to sell it.

No luck with a quick search. Can you post a picture? that would help narrow it down.

Re: Cannot Identify Lower End

Just a note; The shift linkage changed on the 35hp model from 1979 and 1980, including changes into gear case and exhaust housing. Swapping between them would require quite a lot of adaptation work to make shift linkage work, even if the mating surfaces, bolt patterns, and drive shaft would match. Changing into newer gear case could succeed with a new shift linkage rod as it does not require a hole in the exhaust.

The later 20-35hp models from 1980, 1985 for smaller 20/25hp, to 1994 or so seem to have very similar gear cases. Somewhere along the line mounting bolt sizes grew and the shift rod link part seemed have different threads. I have gear case from 1994 20hp in my 1980 35hp, and the gear case had holes for larger bolts and the shift rod connector had to be from the newer unit, but it fit directly on the shift rod.
Smaller models seem to have the similar 2-pc not through-prop gear case up to 1984, but it can be seen already from the EPC that the mating surfaces are way different than on the through-prop gear cases.

Thanks to both you guys.

Here's a few pix of the gearcase and the exhaust housing (22 inches long):

Re: Cannot Identify Lower End

Can't tell the actual color by the photos but by the location of the water intake it is a pre 1980 unit. Still haven't been able to reference either of those part numbers.

Most of the changes made in 1980 were due to the cooling system. They moved the water intake and changed the water pump design. When they redesigned the cooling they had to redesign and move the shift linkages. The redesign was due to the water intake becoming easily fouled causing an overheat condition.

Re: Cannot Identify Lower End

This probably won't help but here it is before breaking it apart.

Also, some of the parts such as the steering bracket (#322884), shallow drive bracket, tie bar, etc., did cross reference to late '70's J/E motors but the Lower Motor Cover/Cowling (#322124) also would NOT show up. Although, there were some crosses to ebay ads which made me wonder what their reference sources were!

Re: Cannot Identify Lower End

I did a quick check and 1978 25hp and 35hp models seem to share the same cylinder and crankcase assembly (block). I don't know about crank case and drive shaft, but you could be able to fit your power head on the lower part. Then you could still need steering parts etc. Could be worth researching if that is doable?
