cannot match serial number to year for my Murcury 500 motor

so i just bought a Merc 500 4cylinder 2 carbs engine. pretty sure it is 50hp but when i try to look up the serial number i cannot find what year it is. i think its late 60 to mid 70 being that the boat it was on is a 72. the SN is 5112247. this number is on a plate under the steering pivot point, the motor is all black with a blue stripe were it says MERCURY. i hope you guys can point me in the right direction to find the exact year.

According to this link from the Mercury & Mariner Outboard FAQs, it's a 1978. Yes, a Merc 500 is 50 hp.

wow that was quick! thank you so much, i always thought i was pretty internet savy in finding this kinda stuff on the net but had been looking all last night and couldnt find it. just goes to show the benefits of being on a message board community. thanks again!

That s/n comes up as:

50 500/50 4-cyl 4962056 5193258 1978 USA
