Can't adjust engine time 5.7GL .... Please help!!!!!

Hi, first my boat especs Chaparral Signature 25.5 1996 volvo penta 5.7L GL.

Problems: Engine don't shut off try to disconect main cables turn off ignition but engine continue on, like its out of time.
Try to move the ignition to adjust the time with my timing gun but engine not make any changes not decrease or not increase, any advice going to be apreciate.
Just in case the engine on wot was running at 3000 rpm.

Do you have a full model number (all the letters) or serial number for your engine. Your engine year could be a year older or newer than your boat.

Hi again, just sorry for previous incomplete post,
Boat Specs: 1996 Chaparral signature 25.5
Engine 5.7GLPNCS
SN 4110137576

Problem: Engine turn on, but don't turn off, if i turn the key to off position the engine continue working but mistfiring, a few days after, i hire a supposed mechanic that replace the carburator kit , i saw when he move the ignition to increase engine time, according to him to get a better engine performance, i know thats mean the guy don't know what his doing, well i try to fix the problem by myself i'm not a engine guru but have a few tools, ok i take my timing tool and set the ignition to 8 DEG on engine timing according to the info that i can get on the web, thats the factory timing, but boat runs without power, rpm's at full power its 3000 rpm's, my problem is if i move the ignition to decrease or increase the engine time i can't get any notice change on the engine rpm's or power, thats normal? sorry about my grammar my primary language is spanish hope you can understand, any advice going to be apreciate. TX.

Sounds like dieseling. Normlly caused by high engine idle rpm, or shutting off to quick after a hard run. Should idle 650-700 rpm. After a hard run, it should idle for a couple minutes to cool the cylinders down before shutting off.

As far a setting the timing, the NC models used a Delco EST distributor and needs to be put into base timing mode to set timing. Read this thread carefully on how that's done.
