I just picke up what appears to be a new 2004 tracker by mercury 25. The previous owner bought it in 2006 and has had it around his place since then. he never put it on a boat and used it. He had a 60 * 100 pole barn full of everything in the world. I saw at least 30 boat motors. Mostly 20-50 yrs old. So I am not sure he even gave me the correct cables or control box. gas tank looks correct. I know he could not find the correct gas hose. So not taking anything for granted. My problem is I can not figure out how to get the control box to work right. The motor end look pretty fool proof hooking one cable to the shift linkage and one to the throtle. I hooked the cables to the control box. The shift linkage appears to work fine. it is the throttle that is giving me trouble. When I start it up it is on way high idle. It looks like if I give it gas on the throttle That the engine end pushes the throttle back down to low idle. It is like that cable is going exactly backwards from what it needs to for it to work. I took apart the control box It looks to me like the throttle control connects to the part that moves the cable below the pivot point and should be connected above the pivot point which would move the cable in the opposite direction. My delema is it looks like the throttle piece is pressed into there. There is a hole on the top side of the pivot point and looks like that is where I need to move it to. Is this piece pressed in there or can I pry it out of there and move it to the top? Or do I have a control box that is not made for this motor? It looks like it should be the one but not assuming anything.
