Can not figure out what this cavity is, nor what if anything goes over the hole to block it up. Some one suggested the holes were for gear pulling. But I am not so sure due to the old gasket stuck to it. Here is a picture of it. I'd Like to find out what goes here if anything. The two holes are tapped for Bolts Of some time

The holes are for the puller used to remove the bearing carrier.
NOTHING bolts to those 2 bolt holes or goes over those 4 big holes. That whole cavity is the exhaust cavity from the engine.

Is that a pricey problem with special tools needed? or is it somethng I can do out in the yard with a somewhat good set of tools?

Depends on whats leaking. That is why the pressure check is needed. if you don't have a manual on the drive, forget it.

Hi -
If this is a volvo penta drive, the tapped holes are for mounting a small pencil shaped anode inside the exhaust passage. I had to replace mine this year and the old anode was a problem to remove. It had corroded so badly it had expanded filling the gap and the bolts were also corroded.

If this is a merc drive, I am clueless.

Even worse, it's a stringer type OMC. Not Merc or Volvo.

PS: Sorry stringer guys, just my opinion.

What does stringer type mean? I am completely new to boats, hence why I found a I/O appealing, I can acttually work on the motor. Who'd have thought that the 'lower unit' would be so hard to fix. Any how, prior to finding the leak; I had fired it up, and let it run for a minute with a hose attached to the motor. The Motor ran good and sounded very mellow, its a 2.5 GM. Everything on the boat works, except the lower unit. its an 83 renker which for 4 years has been sitting in storage. I paid $500 for it. Does this sound like a good investment?

83 renker

Is that a Renken and a Rinker that got together & had a child? :D

from first hand knowledge, Renken (in Charleston, SC) was making really cheap light boats in 1983. If you have a Renken, it won't surprise me if the only thing that's any good is the motor.

The stringer drives is just an old model OMC setup that included the 400's, 800's etc. Best thing to do is get a service manual for your drive and study it till you understand how it works.

Strongly suggest you get an OEM manual instead of a Clymers (I don't know about Seloc, but suspect it's also inferior to the OMC one). Also suggest you get a OMC Parts catalogue for your setup. Both are usually available on eBay.

Does it leak oil in the driveway or just look oily after running the engine?

Re: Can't figure this out

I also am fairly new to outdrives, but I tackled my lower unit and replaced the seals with out much difficulty. Just make note of any shims that come out and where they were(very important!) Other wise if your somewhat capable with tools you should figure it out.
Good luck
