Hey guys, well I found another shift arm at a local boat salvage yard, installed it, and then reassembled it all back together. assembled it with everything in forward and still no reverse. can someone help me figure this out?

Re: can't find reverse

Sounds like when you put your OD back together, you got the intermediate shift shaft installed on the lower shift shaft off by one spline. Take the OD back off and see what positions you can move the shift shaft shoe to. Straight fwd is fwd, 11 o'clock is neutral, 10 o'clock is reverse. Just something easy to check to rule that in or out. If it is off a spline, you have to split the drive back apart to fix.
Does it go to neutral? if it just stays in fwd and wont shift, then it sounds like the steel washer is missing off the lower shift shaft. More details please.

Re: can't find reverse

my shift arm is splined. same as the shaft with a cotter pin hole, so i am assuming that that part is correct. I also noticed that last night that when i put it back together with that shoe receiver facing forward, I got travel left in shift cable. I think that's why I am not getting reverse. The combination of a a cobbled together repair by someone other than me and the cable not being shoved all the way in is my problem. Also, i noticed you guys talking bout 12 o'clock, 11 o'clock. is that from the top or bottom cuz if i lay on the ground and look up at it, the shoe receiver rotates clockwise. My total rotation, veiwed from laying on ground looking up with lower unit off, is 11 o'clock to bout 230 almost 3 o'clock.

Re: can't find reverse

Its all relative... my description was looking fwd, looking down (as if you had the drive off, and you were stradling the top of the drive looking down onto the shift shoe on the intermediate shift shaft). from straight fwd (in fwd), it will rotate CCW to get to neutral and rev. So your description while looking up is correct. Also check... when straight fwd, and you try to rotate the prop CCW, it will lock (and you should hold it in this position when putting the drive back on the boat, e.g., with a bungee cord.) If you rotate the prop CW, it ratchet on the clutch dogs. You'll get the opposite affect if you rotate the shift shaft to "rev" position...the prop will lock if rotated CW and will ratchet if rotated CCW. Thats the way I check to make sure my shift shaft is assembled correctly before reinstalling the drive to the bell housing.

Re: can't find reverse

Well, I worked on the boat tonight and found my reverse. had to install lower unit with everything in reverse. does that mean there,s a problem some where? also, I have a trim hose that leaks at one end, can these trim hoses be repaired? Anybody know what the pressures are in these hoses?
