Can't find the serial # on my late 70' early 80's 40hp Mercury Rocket

:help:I recently purchased a 1985 16 ft. Larsen. It has a 40 hp Mercury. I am trying to find the serial number, for the motor, but the tag has been removed. I am new to boating and looking to purchase a manual for the motor. I need to learn how to change the lower unit oil and tune ups myself. Does anyone know of an alternate location where the serial number would be? Any help would be appreciated.

If it is a later model engine, it will have a disc like this on the lower side of the engine block:

I took the covers off but I don't see the disk anywhere. Guess I'm out of luck. for now I just need to know how to change the lube in the lower unit. There is a timing sticker on the back of the motor that describes the timing of the 79 40 hp motor. But it has an 1981 flywheel on top.
