Hey everyone im hoping someone can guide me in the right direction, I have my first boat it has the merccruiser v6 4.3 . I can not get this boat up top speed im topping out at about 8mph and the rpm's are reading about 5 g's at 8mph. It feels like something pulling it back so to speak? and i also can not get it to go into reverse? Im very new at boating but all it seems to be is push the trigger under the handle and put in in reverse, Has anyone any idea what these issues may be?

Thanks for any advice!

Arthur.

That's usually when happens when you forget to untie the trailer.

Seriously, sounds like a spun prop hub or coupler.

If it's turning 5000rpm, then and you're only moving 8mph, it's a lot more than something "holding it back"

Check it out, but I agree with the spun prop guess.

Re: Cant get boat upto speed?

since you are a new boatowner- what they mean by spun prop incase you do not know, is the newer props have a hub kit that allows the prop to hit something and the hub sipns instead of breaking your prop shaft. just check to see if you have a hubbed prop, if you do just replace the inner hub if not then you may be in big trouble.
also if it is not instaaledproperly this result of can aslo happen.
just suggestions -been there done that.
