Can't get impeller installed on drive shaft of 1968 110 (last 1 inch over the keyway)

Anyone have any tricks to getting the impeller in place? The drive shaft is very clean so no problem getting close to the correct spot, the problem is trying to get it into the keyway. I bought the complete water pump assembly and it came with a new style of key (new to me anyway) that is flat on one side (to match the drive shaft), seems like a good idea but how to you get the impeller to match up and go the last 1" or so onto the key? Are the round keys easier to install? I have not tried the round one yet as I really like the flat on one side key.

Do I just need more patients or is there a trick to it :).

Thanks.

As I recall the ones I installed over the years had a flat side that fit into the slot in the shaft and had a rounded side that faced the impeller with a ridge on it that the impeller slid down onto once you turned it in the right direction.

No offense, but are you sure you ordered the correct parts? Put some multi purpose grease on the flat and stick the key on. Then rub a little grease on the inside of the impeller to help it slide down. Hold the key with your finger to keep it from sliding down as the impeller is put in position. Should slide right on. Once you get it on, rub some grease on the inside of the pump housing and slide it down. At the same time, turn the driveshaft clockwise. It'll slide righ in.

Correction, if the impeller fits the driveshaft it would have to be the right part. Probably just the key slipping down as you push the impeller on.

No offense, but it shouldn't slip down. There is a machined groove in the drive shaft that has the specific dimensions to accept the key. You slide the key in from the side and slide the impeller down on it, turning it till it's slot matches the bulge on the key and on it goes...Piece of cake... If you are having a problem with that how about some pics (1000 words) and show us what you are having a problem with.

That flat key with the ridge on it fitting into the slot of the impeller can be the biggest "pain in the B-tt". However a trick is to make sure the ridge fits into the slot before you put either on the shaft. i.e. make sure there are no burrs on the corners. Take a nail file & very slightly knock off any sharp corners on the lead end of the ridge and the slot and then make sure they easily engage each other. As said above use a little dab of grease to hold the key vertical on the shaft. Note: push key tight into the flat on the shaft and make sure it's centered in the flat and parrallel to the shaft. It should then go right on. Because the key is only barely started in the slot, try not to turn the hub of the impeller when you bend the fins into the chamber.

Good luck, it just takes patience.

I bet you are trying to install the impeller and the lock key at the same time..Right? WRONG! You First install the impeller and spin it into position all the way down and align up the shaft flat spot with the slot in the impeller and then just lightly tap the lock into place .I did my last one this way with no problem. That is the "trick" to it.

None taken, just know from experience that if you don't hold the key in the slot with your finger and you slide the impeller down, it can sometimes push the key down if it's not lined up.

I had lots of fun trying to get the impeller on my 1978 merc 110 (9.8hp)

The way they did the waterpump is upside down from the normal, you have to put the impeller into the cup and keep the keyway in place while doing so...

I tried lots of things trying to get it to stay in place, in the end I used RTV to glue it in place...

Thanks all. I ended up using LongLine's advise about file the ends down a bit smoother, that worked like a charm.

Thanks again.
