Can't get my lower unit gearcase off

Hey Forum. I'm new here.

I have a problem. My 1964 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 outboard is overheating. I was advised (kindof new at this) to remove the lower end and inspect the water pump and impeller. But I can't seem to get it off. The motor was mostly used on lakes. I got the 4 bolts off that hold it on, then I was able to separate the sections, then I removed the screw holding these two brass parts together. In all the videos, after this point, the unit comes off. But no, mine isnt. It is stuck fast in there. I have tried putting force, I have tried prying the brass parts apart, but they won't separate. I have some photos of what I see when I look up into that area. I also saw something rusted and twisted up in the cavity as I looked up towards the top of the engine. Can anybody diagnose this? Or better yet, is there anyone on this forum in the Metro Detroit area that can come and look at this?

if the shift link has been disconnected properly turn the engine upside down and drip sufficient release agent ( release all... WD 40 etc...) down the drive shaft and wait...for it to reach and soak the splines....

after a day or so try again.....if nothing resoak and wait...for another day.

gently try a pry bar to separate the GC or a hevy rubber hammer

If you could separate it that far to remove shift bolt it is not locked solid in the crankshaft.-----Move it up and down a few times.----The crankshaft spline has rusted ( o-ring missing ) and hopefully it is still strong enough to drive the prop----Post the compression numbers here.----If pistons are scored you may be wasting your time.

If you try to shift in forward/reverse and the gear casing goes up and down when you shift, then your shift rod is not fully separated. Otherwise, follow the directions above to get the drive shaft free.

I don’t thing the rod is not disconnected - Incidentally, when I shift to the gap doesn’t close - you can see the rod in the photo I’m attaching now - thanks for the advice.

I don't know how to check the compression. I'm not experienced. I am going to try the above advice. I did manage to get the shifter to disengage so the drive shaft is stuck up in there. I am posting a few more photos. There seems to be a rusty wire twisted up inside. Don't know if this is a fix for something else or my problem

O and I am not able to move the unit up and down at all without tightening the bolts and then loosening them and slowly prying the unit down. There is almost no play.

One way or another you have to move it up and down to break up the rust that is holding the driveshaft !

Where precisely do I put the oil? On the large silver colored shaft?

Now that I got the shifter I disengaged I can turn the bottom end all the way to the right and this is what I’m seeing

So, several days ago, the first recommendation was to get some penetrating oil down in there where the drive shaft slides into the motor, and you haven't done that yet? You'd probably have it apart by now if you had done that. spray some "PB Blaster" or WD40 or some other penetrating oil (I think Liquid Wrench is still the best around) and spray it on the shaft that runs from the power head to the foot of the motor so it runs down that shaft to the top where it slides into the powerhead. You'll have to have the motor upside down. Just like the first couple of folks here suggested.

Yeah I did that this morning. I also saw the gasket crumpled up inside the middle section with the motor inverted. See photos above
