Can't get sea pump to suck water

For the life of me I cannot get my sea pump to suck water when I put the muffs on the outdrive. I have a new impeller and I just installed a new cam in the sea pump. There seem to be no obstructions because I can flow water from the pump to the outdrive. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Can't get sea pump to suck water

I took the advice on another thread and tried hooking a hose to the intake part of the pump and putting the other end in a bucket of water to bypass the outdrive. I had no success. If I give it water it will then shoot it out but at pretty low pressure. Does this mean I need a new pump? What makes a pump go bad? Do they just get worn out and grooved and can no longer produce pressure/suction?

On another note I have been looking at replacement pumps on this website and I come up with numbers 3858847 and 3851623. I know I have all my info right but these pumps don't look like the one I have in my boat. Though very similar, they are not a complete match. Is it possible it's been updated? I posted some pics of what mine looks like though this is NOT my pump. Can anyone get me the right part # or tell me if these numbers I have are the superceded ones?

Re: Can't get sea pump to suck water

Thanks Don. Again, that's not my actual pump. I just found the pics online but mine is pretty grooved as well. There was an incident of sucking a lot of sand up a few years ago but I was able to get the pump to still work after clearing all sand. Do you think the sand "wore" out the pump and it's finally showing? Also, do you think you can help me find the correct part number for the pump?

Thanks again

To find the pump, just click on the Volvo penta parts icon just above your post and click on the OEM parts icon. Then when you get to the engines page, type in your full model number.

I've done that already and come up with 2 options...3858847 and 3851623 both of which are not the exact pump I have though they are similar. Is it possible my pump has been superceded to one of these numbers.

Is it possible my pump has been superceded to one of these numbers.

The 847 number has been changed several times, the 623 has the hose fittings going the wrong directions. Probably for the closed cooling system model.

I noticed that about the 623 one but that's the one that is the most similar with the exception of the hose fittings. Funny thing is though, when I put that number into ebay I get a pump with the the fittings that are in the correct position. Do you think this is my pump? The only I can't tell is if there are holes for my mounting bracket.
