I'm tellin' ya russeller, it's got to be the carb - choke adds more gas, and it's not getting enough gas because the carb is plugged up with dirt.

But if you want to put your mind at ease about the points setting, borrow a timing light and hook it up to a battery. Then clip the pickup to one of the sparkplug leads and start the engine. Point the light up under the flywheel on the right hand side where you see two marks spaced about 1/4" apart on the magneto plate. You should see a mark on the flywheel that 'appears' between the two lines. Then try the other spark plug lead.
This should confirm your work there.

Ah, I see what you mean. I'm betting on coincedance.
You see, you cannot really have your timing that far out on this engine before your spark gets really weak. The flywheel magnet must be in just the right position when the points open for a strong and healthy, 3/8"+ spark. But if you want, confirm it with a timing light. I always do with my own work when setting up the magneto - I can never seem to get the gap just so.
And I don't think it's carburation synchronization (link&sync) because the pickup isn't opening the throttle plate at idle throttle positions. Basically, you're just adjusting the spark advance at that point.
