Can't plane out...and hard to start

I have two problems with an 88' Johnson SPL.
First, at times it is very difficult to start.
We have to sometimes remove the cover and mess with the carburator while the other person turns the key. This seems to work most of the time.

Once we get going, it's very difficult to plane out. Most of the time we can only go 6-8mph, with the throttle pushed all the way over. Every now and then, the boat will pick up and run great, but that's not often. In some cases the boat will rev up to 6-7k RPM's, and we'll have to back it down.
This guy told us when we take it out of the water to engage the throttle, and try to turn the prop. If the prop spun, then we had problems with the rubber gear. But the prop didn't spin.

any idea...sorry for the vague description. Just kinda frustrated.

thanks

Sounds like it's not running on all cylinders. Or are you saying that it will run at 6-7K rpm's at 6-8 mph?? Check spark and compression on all cylinders. If those 2 tests don't point to a problem, check/clean fuel system including carbs. That's assuming that there's something wrong with the motor, not that the prop hub is spun. If the hub is spun, you may not be able to tell by turning it with your hand... mark the inner and outer metal parts (from the back) with line from a black marker. Go for a ride.. if the line isn't lined up anymore, the hub is bad. (it might only slip under load).

those are my ideas... if you're not familiar with OB's a manual would help you troubleshoot.

Brent

you can swap your coils around to opposite cylinders and see if that narrows down wich cylinders may or may not be up to par... how bout a compresion test? what do the plugs look like?
2 things for sure...

1. rebuild and clean those carbs
2. get a manual, ebay has them or iboats.com, you know, this website here... web page
