Can't use Muffs??

Hello folks,
I just got a 96' 8 hp mdl# e8rleds and I had it in the barrel to start it. It started and ran fine but after taking the motor out and looking at the lower unit I notice that there's no water vent to attach a flushing muffs, so my question is everytime i use this motor (mostly in saltwater) will i have to put it in a barrel to flush the motor?
