Capsizing???

Here's a good one?
New to boating (being the captain/owner) I am not sure where to turn with this problem.
My 17' Bayliner Capri tracks and handles weird.
Perhaps it's my imagination but when I turn the wheel a little to the right, it feels like the boat is going to tip over. It doesn't feel that way on the left.
Any thoughts or should I get an airtank and some fins?
Thanks for the lesson?

Eric

Re: Capsizing???

What happens if you let go of the wheel? Does it pull more one way than another?

Some boat naturally turn faster one way that another due to the rotation of the prop.

If you are fighting the boat for steering then check the torque tab on the motor.

Bob

Re: Capsizing???

After you check/adjust the torque tab then try again. I assume that you are driving on the right side and perhaps more weight is on the right side. I think that this is a normal sensation. My boat feels that way now (I sit on the right) but I never really though about it. My last boat was an 18 foot center console and it didn't have that sensation.

If it really gets unstable then you should perhaps check with a shop.

Re: Capsizing???

Bob,
If I let go of the wheel at a low rate of speed it tracks pretty much in a straight line. When I speed things up and cut to the left all is well, however when I cut to the right the left (gunnel?)
keeps reching skyward. I agree with your theory about me being alone in the boat weighing 230# could have some affect but I'm at a loss.
Can you briefly describe the torque tab you spoke of?
Thanks for your time
Eric

Re: Capsizing???

the tab looks like a small fin right above the prop. u loosen a bolt to adjust it. u may have to adjust it a couple times to get it right, assuming that is what's causing your problem.
