Hello.
I am just about to repaint my old outboard and I am trying to find out whether, apart from original colors, there is any real advantage in using antique marine paint opposed to car paint.
Both are available in spray cans and I would use a no-sanding self etching primer as a base.
Thanks for any thoughts ,experiences and comments.
Rolmops.

Hi rolmops,,

I checked out OMC engine paint spray packs at the local marine dealer and it turned out to be normal acrylic lacquer,, so I used the same thing, at a fraction of the OMC cost..

your choise of primer is a good one.

I did it in many layers, (about 9 thin layers if memory serves..)

go for it, my results were pretty good if I do say so myself. :)

regards

frank

have to add that I find lacquer much easier to apply, particularly in less than ideal conditions. Enamel can be tricky. Lacquer dries very quickly, allowing multiple thin coats even for impatient folks like me. After the final coat has dried (overnight to be sure), go over everything with wet/dry sandpaper, about 400 grit used wet -- gives a great sheen.

rolmops

If you have access to a compressor and a paint gun, I'd recommend an acrylic urathane (plastic paint). Nothing out there is as chemical resistant and the UV protection will prevent fading for 10 years.... :)
