Age of the vehicle? It could be base coat(color)/ clear coat.
just paint? polish it out (if there is enough there)

Re: Car Paint

Should be paint. Turtle wax color back works good and doesn't remove much material.

Plus what the fairlaneman suggests is also a good option.

Does anything change if his 1996 model Charokee has basecoat/clearcoat? Because it does.

Yep, if it's base/clearcoat. Whole nother ballgame.
Sorry if I missed on paint types and the year:redface:

It's the condition of the clearcoat that makes the vehicle look lighter than it once was because of the tiny scratch's! It gives the base color a milky look! You may actually have to wet sand the clear with 2000 grit and polish it back. Unless the vehicle has spent a good deal of time in the garage, the upper surfaces may not have much clear left to sand and polish. It's risky business doing this on a 12 year old vehicle! Hond polishing with a good carnuba cleaner wax will however do wonders.

Ah don't worry about it. I was pretty sure, but had to look it up on Mitchell Ultramate (crash estimating system) to be positive. Jeep Cherokees have had basecaot/clearcoat since at least 1987 according to them. That was a surprise, for sure!

Check out automotive detailers in your area.

They have the tools and experience to remove the oxidation layer and any surface scratches that have accumulated over the years without harming/burning through the clearcoat.

You might be surprised how little (relatively) this costs compared to doing it yourself. I know someone who has the pros go over his cars right before he sells them. I saw one of his white cars before and after and it was astounding the difference it made. To me, white would be one of the more difficult colors to notice improvement.
