car towing capibillities question

Do you think that a 1992 chrysler lebaron (not sure if it is a 4 or 6cyl) would be able to tow my boat. My boat is 16' long and the trailer and boat weigh about 1200 lbs.
My mom is giving me her car, but I want to be sure it will tow my boat.
The car has a class 2 trailer hitch on it already.
Any kind of input would be appreciated.
Cheers,
B.C.

It will probably work, Chris.

Have a Chrysler Tech look at the ID plate and tell you what it can safely tow.

Thanks JB, good idea.
I would only really be concerned if it was a 4 cyl. That weight would be hard on the tranny after a while.

Chris - don't forget the brakes. A fresh set of pads are cheap and good insurance.

If your boat is truly 1200 pounds, you should be OK. I'll bet it weighs more than that.

Chris, I had a 90 LeBaron with the 4 cylinder and used it a couple of times to pull a pop up camper. It worked fine. Not exactly a speed demon, but it wasn't one to start with.

Watch the head gaskets on that 4 if that is what you have.

I have a 17' Aluminum bass boat that I pull with my '04 CR-V. I have no problems going up hill or retrieving from the water.

What does that have to do with a 1992 Chrysler?

The Chrysler tow rating is 1000 pounds-MAX. The engine/trans. are not not the issues, the body and brakes are.

Most front wheel drive passenger cars are 1000 lbs. towing cap. Usually pulling is not the problem, but stopping is the problem.

I would be wary of that class 2 hitch. Most third party installers don't care what they put on a vehicle.

any car can tow 1,000 lbs. 1,200 behind that car will be no problem if you take it easy
