car vs. marine

I'm buying a boat 1t has a 454 not installed . How do I know it's a marine engine , do I care ? Boat is out of business manufactuer 1988 . Marine starter , alternater I'm in business ? Right ? Difference in freeze plugs I've heard - so what . Help is truly appreciated . Martin

Marine vs. auto engine (long block) = little difference, don't worry about it. Your starter and alt are important because they're insulated to reduce the chance of spark. The frost plugs on a marine engine are brass and you will have to change them if they're plated steel (the steel will rot out way too fast and they're a bugger to change later). What kind of boat is it?

...I believe the coil and carb should be marine too. Again, having to do with keeping the boat from spark and exploding and sending you skywards!
