Motor: 1975 Sea King, 5hp Clinton air cooled

Problem: In order to start it I have to troll along with the electric motor (rolling start on the water). I guess since there is no neutral something is slightly out of adjustment and it has trouble starting under a load. When the boat is moving a little it starts o.k. and then runs good.

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks in advance,
D Ray

Re: Carb Adjustment?

Haven't heard that one before. With the boat sitting with a normal load, make sure the motor is setting fairly level. I find that the tilt level can make a big difference when starting. I'm thinking you have a lot of exhaust back pressure with the water inside the exhaust while the boat is at rest. The forward motion is probably lowering that pressure. That would lead me to do a compression test. A healthy motor should overcome that.
