Carb adjustment

I have a 48 spl 1990. It has a hard time starting. It looks like it's getting flooded. It runs great WOT.

It has 2 carbs. My question is, do you turn both carbs out 1 and 1/2 for the initial setting? Do you leave one seated and just adjust the other one first? From the initial 1 and 1/2, do you turn in or out?

How long have you owned it ?-----Are you pushing the key in WHILE cranking it over ?------You turn both out 1-1/2 turn.----That should allow it to start and keep running.----Then you must fine tune with boat in the water.-------But carburetors generally do not go out of adjustment.-----What is your motor doing / not doing ?----What other trouble shooting has been done if any ?-----Post your compression test values.

Had the boat for about a year now. At the beginning, the boat started just fine. After a little while, the motor has a hard time starting without high idle. So I would start the motor in high idle, warm up, then lower the idle and put in gear fast to about 1/4 throttle. It would not low idle in neutral or in gear. It runs just fine 1/4 throttle to full throttle.

I changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, sea form in gas and carb. Check linkage adjustment. I adjusted the carb about a month ago. It would low idle in neutral and in gear. But it reverted back. I just got off the water after adjusting the carbs again and got it to idle again. It will start without high idle.

I have not check spark outside of the motor or compression.

Compression test is ALWAYS step # 1 in outboard trouble shooting !----And have you serviced the water pump ?

Might be dirt/gum/varnish in the carbs. Have to come apart for a proper cleaning

I was thinking dirty carbs. I'll get the compression numbers tomorrow. The boat has been catching fish so I just learned to put up with the issue and I have a trolling motor. Now that the fishing is slowing down, I was going to do some maintenances.

Check compression (post numbers), and clean the carbs. Install carb kits.

Carb cleaning needs to be complete -- strongly suggest separating top and bottom, removing float and float valve, removing the needle and the aluminum fitting on top, opening plugs for the jets, and soaking all metal in solvent for a couple of hours or overnight. I use lacquer thinner.

Finish with thin wire and carb spray in every orifice. Do one carb at a time so reassembly is not an issue. Set the needles to 1 1/2 open, or a little less, and start in a barrel or in the lake. Adjust for slow idle when warmed up, no stalling when shifting into gear at idle or at throttling up. If in a barrel, water should be about half way up the leg, and limit to idle or fast idle (quick throttle up and back to make sure no hesitation or stalling).

And since you will have the carbs off the engine, it is essential that you do a "Link & Sync" which synchronizes carb opening with spark advance. The procedure is in the Service Manual and you must start at the beginning and follow it to the letter. Start in the middle and you will not get this right.Those procedures start with the throttle cable disconnected. Reattaching and adjusting it will be the last thing you do in the process.
