Carb and trim cylinder problems

84' Mercruiser 350. Idles fine, but when you give it some gas at loads up, almost dies, then clears up. Timing is set proper at 8 degrees. The Quadrajet has sat for the past 3 years. I am thinking the needle and seat may have some debris in it possibly. The outdrive is not installed yet so there is no load on the engine.

88' Alpha One. Was running the cylinders in and out to prime them. I ran them in and out about 5 times no issues, but then the port side would only retract partially and then come back out a little and stop there. With no fluid in them they move in and out smoothly. And they can twist easily on their cylinders.
None of these components have seen the water or run in the past three years. I have fitted them into a 98 Glastron 225 GS.
Any advice be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like the accelerator pump in the carb is not working. With the cover off, look down the carb while someone pumps the throttle. You should see 2 healthy squirts of fuel being sprayed into the primary (smaller) barrels.

Are you allowing the stbd cylinder to fully extend and retract, then keeping you finger on the switch. Because the cylinders hoses are paired off to each ram, the ram with the least resistance will extend (or retract) first, then the other.

I did wait for one to catch up to the other. Should I have held the switch down for a bit longer? They were moving almost evenly by the 5th stroke. Then the next time I ran them in and out it got hung up a little bit, and then a bit more.
I disconnected the portside hydraulic lines and it was quite a chore of moving that cylinder in and out a little at a time to remove all the fluid last night. Once it was empty of course, it's slide back and forth fine. Maybe a check valve froze in the middle of this process?

And I will take a look at the accelerator pump this evening when I get home.

I was at my local Mercury dealer today picking up some drive oil, and they recommended I put the drive on to see if the weight will free up the cylinder. Hmm....

Drive oil. If it's red, use ATF. If it's yellow/honey coloured, use SAE30 oil. No need to pay Merc to put it in their packaging.

Ok, pumping the throttle I get to good streams for a little less than half the full stroke of the carburetor.
I already killed one quart of the good trim oil. I was picking up the gear oil for the alpha today btw. I guess I wasn't clear on that.
I switched to straight 30 weight and the pump seems to be a bit labored with the same results on the port side cylinder. There was no fluid in this trim pump when I bought the hull. I'm thinking of switching over to ATF.
I haven't tried to Prime the trim cylinders with the drive on yet though.

Anytime the rams stop before fully retracting the small "O" ring in the front of the ram is leaking and the fluid is "equalizing" inside the ram. You need a seal kit . Lighter weight oil should work best for trim fluid.
As far as the carburetor it is a good time to rebuild it so that you know it is in good condition.
