Guess the title says it all mostly, but lemme tell ya what i got here

1988 Bayliner Capri
3.0L GM Motor
3.0L Cobra Outdrive setup

now when i got this boat, the outdrive didnt work, 2 things was wrong with it, (1) he ran it in salt water and never flushed it, sat for 2 years, harden up and froze lower end up, (2) shifter rod in lower end was bent..

ended up pulling a 3.0L Cobra Outdrive from my 20ft Fiberform boat,

Now Moves and shifts..

today it stopped running all together.. spent 3 hours stranded out in the middle of the lake working on this dam thing finally i grabbed my rope, jumped in the water and back paddled my butt to shore with boat in tow, the dock master looked at me like i was a nut case, (good swimmer), lol, was a long pull tho..

Replaced , Coil, Plugs, Points, Condinser,

Found out that after that, had NO spark, so lol funny part, i took coild from a 351 ford motor, put it in there just to dink around ( YA I AM NUTZ), and WAMMO started right up, played over 8 hours on the lake..

But in order to get this dang thing on step and throttle up, I have to shimmy the throttle and and forth like on a car feathering the pedal, then it gets up on step and goes, but it i go right from neutral to forward or revearse, BAM carb spits and it dies..

Choke is a heated sensor style, i wish it was electronic, it has a tube that comes from the intake, and heats the inner coil, i have to when its cold shove a (OLD SCHOOL) screwdriver in the carb to hold choke open, start it, run for about 30 secs, then pull the screwdriver and then it idels fine... but still soon as i go to move from neutral to forward or revearse, BAM spits and Dies...

ARG GOIN NUTS, i HATE THIS ENGINE, wife loves boat to much for me to torch it, I wanna Convert it all to a new Merc 4.3L MPI with a Bravo 3 Outdrive, but i dont wanna spend 17k to do so, i would rather buy a new boat..

my other option, Buy a fresh new carb??
Or try a TBI Conversion, (Costs Money)

Oh god, What to do..

I even played with both the screws under the carb, i read alot of threads about carbs here, so i turned them all the way in, and 2 full rotations out and she starts right up (Most the time) but still spits and dies when i throw it to forward or reverse unless i feather the throttle back and forth tell the rps start going up then i FLoor it,

have you checked the timing on the engine?

also, have you ever messed with a carb in the past other than after reading a couple posts on here before you played with the idle mixture screws?

how old is the carb itself? has it ever been rebuilt as long as you've owned it? could be gunked up inside causing half the issues you're having.

what carb do you have on this thing exactly? are the omc 3.0 carbs quadrajet based? holley based? or rochester based?

gonna check timing today, and think the carb is as old as the motor, motor was rebuilt at beginning of the year, but dont know if carb was rebuilt, its a rochester 2 barrel , and i been playing back and forth with the screws since i got it, and it seems 2 full turns out is the best running set, it idles about 800, cant get it lower for some reason, it just wont go down anymore, kinda think its high low idle is one reason i have a issue going from forward to neutral as well, it wont go as long as motor is running, i have to shut engine off in order to go into neutral .. in order to keep it going in idle most time tell its way warm, is pull the shifter out to the bypass position and give it some throttle to the 1st click forward, then it stays idle tell it heats to 175

You have the same setup I have (but my boat is a 19', I thought....) and I have had quite a few issues with my carb as well.

I know its not how it should work, but when mine is cold, I crank the idle screw about 3/4-1 turn, then once it warms up, its running too high and I turn it back down. Why? not sure, but when you are putting it into gear, the sudden load on the engine is killing it because its too slow (low RPM) for that load. When it's sped up, that small gap between base idle and throttle isn't an issue and you'll stay lit through it.

Ideally, if I was really handy, I would install one of those old pull choke-style adjustments for the idle (my motorcycle has the exact thing, come to think of it....) and if I was overly wealthy, I would do as you suggest and put a new boat behind my key.

For now though, try fiddling with your idle screw some when its cold, until you can sort out any other issues. m2c. -CG

If the fuel pump is supplying the correct amount of fuel, most of the time when a carb "bogs out", it is more of a symptom rather than the cause. It could be the accelerator pump not giving that all important squirt of fuel when you apply throttle. If not that, I would look into the ignition system. Point gap too close causing the timing to retard. Spark not getting through to the plugs by a bad cap or rotor. Bad spark plug cables light up like lasers when they're damp, (best seen in the dark) .

Just some things to think about before you invest too much money.

Try putting a wire between the coil (positive side) and the battery (positive side).

My 1979 140HP/3.0L GM engine ran the same way when I bought it. The guys at the shop I got it from did some work to the fuel line. The pick-up line actually fell off somehow. After that the engine was still having problems when I would put the hammer down. The whole thing would just bogg and die. I rebuilt the carb, and she has been going great since!! And the lowest idle RPM I can get is 800. Any lower and I dont think that she would stay running when you shift.

The ESA's microswitch could be out of adjustment and interfering with the spark when you shift into gear. Its only supposed to mess with the spark when you're shifting to neutral, so that it will lower the RPM enough to allow the clutch dogs to dissengage.

If that's not it, I'm leaning towards jeromeb's comment about the carb's accellerator pump not providing that squirt of fuel.
