I just purchased a 1985 (k code anyway)Yamaha 40HP electric start 3 cyl and boat. My friend (whom I purchased this from) said it had been giving him carb problems. I started to prime it when I got the boat and saw fuel leaking from the motor. I popped the cover and it was coming from the bottom carb (the head of the bolt was broken off). This bolt...as you may already know has what appears to be a bleeder screw. I assume that's likely the problem. In the process my other friend was helping me when we were removing the carbs and the plastic snout on the fuel pump(pointing towards the carb) broke off. Can I use epoxy on this? I'm going to try to find the bolt tomorrow but dont' really wanna replace the fuel pump as my income tax purchased the boat/motor. If it has to be done then i'll let her sit (not sure how expensive they are either). Does anyone have any advice and where can I purchase the fuel pump?

Thanx for your time
Joe

FireAm94,

Epoxy might work, yet I would not do it. You do not want to risk a major fuel leak under the cowl.

hello
buy the new pump. they should be less than 40 dollars. on the drain screw. remove the fuel bowl and if your not sure of your skill take it to a machine shop and they will drill out and retap the hole. its a common occurance. order the new screw and oring to take to the shop with you so they can insure proper thread size and pitch. I have all the stuff here but cant remember the excact sizes:). old age is creeping in :) :)
good luck and keep posting

Thanx for the responses guys! I was hoping you'd say that fuel pump was inexpensive hehe. My friend that was helping me is a machinist and we drilled it out and will run a tap to clear the threads so we got that under control. With my luck I figured that fuel pump would be about $150 hehe. BTW...do you recommend running the oil injection or mixing manually? I've heard bad about the oil injection but only talked to a few people.

Thanx again!
Joe

If it has oil injection, keep it. You are more likely to forget to mix the oil than the injection system is to go bad. Pull out the tank and lines and clean them well. Run premix 50:1 to begin with and monitor oil usage through the injection system to be sure it works. Then you will be good to continue on the injection system and not have to premix.
Good luck.
Knightgang
